The challenge

Toyota sponsored more Olympic athletes than anyone could name. The site had to make the roster feel like a movement.

150+ athletes across 40+ countries is a data problem wearing a marketing brief. A grid of athlete cards would have flattened the very scale that made the sponsorship remarkable.

We wanted visitors to feel the geography: stories spread across the whole planet, discoverable by spinning it. And we wanted them to be able to do something about it, not just read.

The approach

Moves that mattered
01

Make the globe the nav

An interactive WebGL globe turned the athlete roster into exploration. Spin, land on a country, meet its athletes.

02

Performance is design

The 3D experience had to load fast worldwide on the devices people actually own, which shaped every asset and shader decision.

03

Close the loop between fan and athlete

Each athlete's page led with their journey, tying personal narrative to Toyota's mobility story. Then it gave you a way in. Fans could write a message of encouragement to that athlete, and those messages were delivered before they competed. The story didn't end on the page.

The outcome

A sponsorship became an experience people explored instead of a press release they skimmed.

The globe gave the campaign a signature interaction and made the scale of Toyota's commitment legible in seconds.

Fans sent thousands of messages of support through the site. Athletes told us they read them. That detail stuck with us more than any metric.

It also proved 3D on the marketing site could be fast, accessible, and global, opening the door for the WebGL work that followed.
